Pediatric Acupuncture
helping kids get back to being kids
WHat is Pediatric Acupuncture?
The specific style of Pediatric Acupuncture available at Blue Sky Family Acupuncture is known as Sho-Ni-Shin. This is a Japanese method of treatment in which the practitioner uses specialized metal tools to stimulate the channels and acupuncture points without the insertion of needles. This is a totally pain-free, needle-free technique that was created specifically to treat children 12 years and younger.
Children are very Yang, which makes Qi stronger at the surface of the body than adults. This allows us to be able to manipulate and balance Qi without the need for needles.
Not only is Pediatric Acupuncture good for treating illness and disorders as they pop up, but it really shines as a preventative measure to keep your little ones happy and healthy.
How does it work?
Depending in the age of the child, they are either sitting on the table themselves or can sit in mom or dad’s lap. For infants and toddlers, having a small toy to occupy themselves during the treatment is a great tool to help them hold still and comfort any nerves.
Sho-Ni-Shin incorporates the use of small metal tools to stimulate the skin to bring the Qi to the surface through the use of gently scraping, tapping, and rubbing the skin along the meridians. Children love this part and I have even had children grab for the tools to do it themselves. Once the Qi has been brought to the surface, another tool is used to gently poke and press the skin to stimulate acupuncture points on the body.
At this point we can also discuss the use of Chinese Herbal Therapy if needed.
There are some circumstances that may call for needle insertion, but they are quick insertions and the needle is never retained.
